The Multistate Professional Responsibility Exam (“MPRE” ) is an ethics exam administered by the National Conference of Bar Examiners (“NCBE” ) and not by the District of Columbia. The MPRE is administered separately from the D.C. bar exam and is generally tested three times each year in March, August, and November.
Please visit the Ethics Exam/MPRE page for general information about the MPRE and the MPRE application process.
MPRE for the District of Columbia
The District of Columbia requires an MPRE score of 75 or greater. D.C. accepts passing scores achieved up to 25 months prior to the exam or for one-year from the date of the exam results. Attorneys seeking D.C. Admission on Motion must satisfy the MPRE requirement.
The MPRE score report must be included in the D.C. bar exam application. Sending the MPRE score directly through the MPRE exam answer sheet is insufficient. Applicants that have previously taken the D.C. bar exam in the past year and filed an MPRE score report with the previous application do no need to provide an additional MPRE score report with the new application. The MPRE requirement may be fulfilled after filing the D.C. bar exam application. Applicants must provide the D.C. Committee on Admissions with a MPRE score report with the five-digit exam identification number.
District of Columbia MPRE Scoring Reciprocity/Transfer
The District of Columbia accepts MPRE scaled scores that were achieved in another jurisdiction. Applicants cannot have their MPRE scores transferred by having the NCBE send the Score Report to the D.C Committee on Admissions. The MPRE Score Report must be sent with the D.C. bar exam application.
