The Multistate Professional Responsibility Exam (“MPRE”) is an ethics exam administered by the National Conference of Bar Examiners (“NCBE”) and not by the state of Michigan. The MPRE is administered separately from the Michigan bar exam and is generally tested three times each year in March, August, and November.
Please visit the Ethics Exam/MPRE page for general information about the MPRE and the MPRE application process.
MPRE for Michigan
Michigan requires an MPRE scaled score of 85 or greater prior to admission by exam. The score is valid indefinitely. Applicants are not required to have graduated from law school in order to take the MPRE, and the MPRE may be taken an unlimited number of times. (Michigan Board of Law Examiners Policy Statement 2(D)).
Applicants are allowed to take the bar exam one time only before character and fitness and MPRE clearance is received. Applicants failing the exam who do not have both clearances at the time exam scores are released receive unofficial results only, which allow them to participate in the appeal process. They do not receive an application for re-examination and cannot file an application for re-examination until both clearances are received.
(Policy Statement 2(F)).
The MPRE is not required for Michigan Admission on Motion.
Michigan MPRE Scoring Reciprocity/Transfer
Michigan accepts MPRE scaled scores that were achieved in another jurisdiction.
