New Mexico Bar Reciprocity
New Mexico Rule 15-303 NMRA (effective June 1, 2025) governs reciprocity admission. Applicants must have passed a bar examination elsewhere and practiced for five of the seven years immediately preceding the application in a reciprocal jurisdiction (or qualifying New Mexico limited-license practice). Additional Requirements
New Mexico reciprocity requirements include:
Law Degree. An ABA J.D. is preferred; non-ABA graduates may qualify if licensed for four of the past six years under Rule 15-202(A)(4).
Practice of Law. Active practice for five of the seven years in a reciprocal jurisdiction (or qualifying limited-license practice).
Failed Exam Lookback. Failed the New Mexico competence examination within five years → ineligible.
MPRE. A score of 80 or greater on the MPRE (board may allow reporting after application).
New Mexico Law Class. Required.
New Mexico Application Procedure
Apply through the Reciprocity portal. Applications generally expire after twelve months.
