Tennessee Law Professors

Rule 7, Section 10.02 of the Tennessee Supreme Court Rules allows attorneys that are enrolled, employed, or associated with a clinical program at an approved Tennessee law school to practice before Tennessee courts in all causes where the attorney is associated with the clinical program. Admission is limited to two years, except in the discretion of the Tennessee Supreme Court for special situations and for good cause shown.

Eligibility
Attorneys must:

  • Be enrolled or employed in a clinical program in an approved Tennessee law school, or be graduates of an approved law school and employed or associated with an organized legal services program operated by an approved Tennessee law school that provides legal assistance to indigents in civil or criminal matters.
  • Be members of a court of last resort of another state, territory, or the District of Columbia.

Practice
Attorneys are admitted to practice before Tennessee court in all causes where the attorney is associated with a legal clinic operated in association with an approved law school. The clinical law professors may be suspended in accordance with the rules for suspension or disbarment of attorneys.

Application
Attorneys must file the following with the Secretary of the Tennessee Board of Bar Examiners:

  • A certificate of any court of last resort certifying that the attorney is a member in good standing at the bar of that court.
  • A statement signed by the law school Dean that the attorney is enrolled or employed in a clinical program in an approved Tennessee law school.

Upon satisfaction by the Board, the Board will grant and certify the admission to practice via letter to the applicant.

Termination
Admission to practice ceases when the attorney is no longer enrolled or associated with the program. A representative of he law school or legal services program must file a statement to that effect with the Secretary of the Board.
