Washington Professional Responsibility Eam (WPRE)

Washington does not administer the Multistate Professional Responsibility Exam (MPRE). Washington tests the Washington Professional Responsibility Exam as part of the Washington Bar Exam.

Washington Professional Responsibility Exam

The Washington Professional Responsibility Exam is administered as the third day of the Washington bar exam, which is the last Thursday of February and July of each year. This exam tests the Washington Rules of Professional Conduct.

Applicants must answer six (6) essays covering professional responsibility in one 2 hour and 15 minute session. The essays are designed for 22-minutes each. Applicants must achieve a score of at least 70 percent in order to pass.

Applicants with scores falling within a set range may appeal. Applicants must file an appeal within a required deadline and request that up to six answers be reviewed for each portion (Substantive and Professional Responsibility). During the review, grades may increase or decrease.

Attorneys seeking Washington Admission on Motion must pass this ethics exam if the attorney’s home jurisdiction requires Washington attorneys to take the MPRE for reciprocal admission in the attorney’s home jurisdiction.
