West Virginia Law Professors

Rule 4.6 of the Rules for Admission to the Practice of Law in West Virginia allows law professors at the West Virginia University College of Law to be temporarily admitted to practice in West Virginia without taking the bar exam. The temporary admission is permitted for five years. After the five-year period, law professors may be granted admission without a time limitation.

Eligibility
Law professors must:

  • Be bona fide residents of West Virginia.
  • Currently hold a full time faculty position at the West Virginia University College of Law.
  • Be admitted to practice before the court of last resort of another state.

Application and Certification
Attorneys must file an Application with the Board of Law Examiners and pay the fee required by the NCBE. The law school Dean must file an annual report with the Clerk of the Supreme Court of Appeals regarding all full-time faculty members who are currently admitted under the law professor rules. The reports should be field between July 1 and July 15 of each year.
