The Multistate Professional Responsibility Exam (“MPRE”) is an ethics exam administered by the National Conference of Bar Examiners (“NCBE”) and not by the state of Connecticut. The MPRE is administered separately from the Connecticut bar exam and is generally tested three times each year in March, August, and November.
Please visit the Ethics Exam/MPRE page for general information about the MPRE and the MPRE application process.
Connecticut requires an MPRE scaled score of 80 or greater prior to recommendation for admission.
As an alternative to the MPRE, the MPRE requirement may be satisfied with a grade of at least “Pass” or “C” in a course in professional responsibility/legal ethics at a law school approved by the Committee. CLE courses and law school courses with a professional responsibility “component” do not qualify.
The MPRE/Ethics Class requirement must be fulfilled within four years before or one year after the applicant files for admission. For example, if an application is filed on November 1, 2012, the MPRE score or valid course must be no older than November 1, 2008. The same candidate would have only until November 1, 2013 to meet the requirement. After that date, the candidate would have to retake the bar exam. (Regulations of the
Connecticut Bar Examining Committee, Article IV).
Attorneys seeking Connecticut Admission on Motion or admission as Connecticut House Counsel must meet the MPRE/Ethics Class requirement.
Connecticut accepts MPRE scaled scores that were achieved in another jurisdiction.
