Connecticut House Counsel

Connecticut Practice Book § 2-15A permits eligible out-of-state lawyers to register as authorized house counsel without taking the Connecticut bar exam. Confirm current forms and fees with the Connecticut Bar Examining Committee.

Eligibility
Applicants generally must be members in good standing of each U.S. (or qualifying foreign) jurisdiction where licensed, and be employed by (or relocating within three months to be employed by) an “organization” as defined in § 2-15A—typically a business entity that is not itself engaged in practicing law for third parties.

Practice and compliance
Services are limited to the employing organization under § 2-15A(c). Authorized house counsel must pay the annual client security fund fee and register annually with the Statewide Grievance Committee as required by Practice Book §§ 2-26, 2-27(d), 2-68, and 2-70.
