Kansas Miscellaneous Admission

Kansas Temporary Practice Rule 710 of the Rules Relating to Admission of Attorneys allows attorneys to temporarily practice in Kansas.

Eligibility
Attorneys must:

  • Be applicants for admission the Kansas Bar upon written examination.
  • Be approved by the Board to sit for the Kansas bar exam.
  • Cannot have failed the Kansas bar exam or a bar exam of any other jurisdiction within 10 years prior to filing an application in Kansas.

Application
The application must include a written statement from an attorney that is in good standing and who is actively engaged in the practice of law in Kansas. The written statement must state that the attorney will supervise and be responsible for the acts of the applicant during the period covered by the temporary permit.

A temporary permit may be granted if the Kansas Supreme Court finds the circumstances justify temporary practice. Applicants are required to take the applicable oath.

Termination
The temporary permit expires on the date the results of the bar exam are announced if the individual fails to pass the bar exam. If the individual passes the bar exam, the temporary permit expires on the last Friday in April or September following the bar exam.

If the individual withdraws the application, the temporary permit expires on the date the application is withdrawn. If the individual does not take the bar exam, the temporary permit expires on the first day of the administration of the bar exam. The temporary permit is revoked if the Board re-opens the investigation into the applicant’s good moral character and mental and emotional fitness to engage in the active and continuous practice of law.
