Oklahoma Bar Exam Format

The Oklahoma bar exam takes two days and consists of the Oklahoma Essays and the Multistate Bar Exam (“MBE”). Oklahoma law is tested on the Oklahoma bar exam.

Oklahoma Essays
Oklahoma tests 16 Oklahoma essays. Each essay is 30-minutes. Subjects may include:

  • Administrative Law
  • Business Associations (Agency, Partnership (including Joint Ventures), Corporations and LLCs)
  • Conflict of Law
  • Constitutional Law
  • Commercial Law (Contracts, UCC, Consumer law, Creditor’s Rights, Bankruptcy)
  • Criminal Law
  • Family Law
  • Intestate Succession
  • Oklahoma Rules of Professional Conduct
  • Procedural Law (Pleadings, Practice, Evidence, and Remedies (Damages, Restitution, and Equity)
  • Property
  • Torts
  • Trusts and Estate Planning (including federal estate and gift taxation)
  • Wills

MBE (Multiple Choice)
Oklahoma uses the standard MBE. Subjects include:

  • Civil Procedure
  • Constitutional Law
  • Contracts (Common Law, Sales/UCC Art. 2)
  • Criminal Law
  • Criminal Procedure
  • Evidence
  • Real Property
  • Torts

MBE Score Transfer
Oklahoma accepts MBE scores from other jurisdictions for concurrent exams only and claims only to be able to accept scores from jurisdictions that administer the other portions of the exam on Thursday/Friday.

16 Oklahoma Essay Questions, 30-minutes each (8 hours)

Day 2
Morning – MBE Part I (100 questions; 3 hours)
Afternoon – MBE Part II (100 questions; 3 hours)

Oklahoma Bar Exam Dates and Application

The Oklahoma bar exam is held on the last Tuesday and Wednesday of February and July. Applications can be found on the Oklahoma Board of Bar Examiners’ Website.

Grading

Oklahoma Bar Exam Weight

OK Essays 50%
MBE 50%

Grading Procedure
Beginning with the July 2013 bar exam, Oklahoma will scale to the essay portion to the MBE using a 132 point scaled score.

Passing Score
On the essay portion of the exam, 75% is considered passing.

Review and Appeal for Applicants Failing the Oklahoma Bar Exam
Applicants who fail the bar exam may make a written request to obtain a list showing the grades that were awarded on each question and copies of the applicant’s answer to the essay questions. There is a small fee. The written request must be made within 30 days following the announcement of the bar exam results. Failing applicants cannot speak with an examiner. Applicants who pass the bar exam cannot obtain copies of their answers to the essay questions.

Scores that are close to the passing grade are automatically regarded prior to the release of the bar exam results.

Retaking the Oklahoma Bar Exam

Applicants may take the Oklahoma bar exam an unlimited number of times. A different application deadline applies for re-exam applicants.
