Louisiana Multistate Professional Responsibility Exam (MPRE)

The Multistate Professional Responsibility Exam (“MPRE” ) is an ethics exam administered by the National Conference of Bar Examiners (“NCBE” ) and not by the state of Louisiana.   The MPRE is administered separately from the Louisiana bar exam and is generally tested three times each year in March, August, and November.

Please visit the Ethics Exam/MPRE page for general information about the MPRE and the MPRE application process.

MPRE for Louisiana

Louisiana requires an MPRE scaled score of 80 or greater before being licensed in Louisiana. Passing MPRE scores are valid for five years from the date of the MPRE exam. (Admission to the Bar, Section 8(D)). Applicants may take the MPRE at any time after successfully completing his or her required law school course work in legal ethics or professional responsibility. (Admission to the Bar, Section 7(B)).

Applicants who have been admitted to the Bar of another state, who have fulfilled the MPRE requirement, and who have complied with the CLE requirements of that state of admission will be considered to have satisfied the MPRE requirement. The MPRE requirement will not be waived for those who have not previously passed the MPRE in connection with the admission to the Bar of another state or who have not previously been admitted to the Bar of another state. (Section 8(D)).

Louisiana MPRE Scoring Reciprocity/Transfer

Louisiana accepts MPRE scaled scores that were achieved in another jurisdiction.

Applicants who have been admitted to another jurisdiction and meet the MPRE qualifications must submit a letter from the CLE office stating that all requirements have been met for that year and must be forwarded to the Committee on Bar Admission’s Office along with a certified copy from the NCBE of the MPRE score.
