Maine House Counsel

Maine does not maintain a separate house-counsel registration program. Out-of-state lawyers employed as in-house counsel generally rely on Maine Rules of Professional Conduct 5.5(d)(1), which permits legal services on behalf of the employer if the lawyer is authorized to practice in the jurisdiction where the lawyer principally practices and the services do not require pro hac vice admission.

Limits
This safe harbor does not authorize holding out to the public as a Maine lawyer, establishing a systematic and continuous public-facing practice, or appearing in Maine tribunals without pro hac vice or other admission. See also Maine MJP.
