Rhode Island House Counsel

Article II, Rule 9(b) of the Supreme Court Rules allows attorneys employed by a corporation or other entity with an office in Rhode Island to Register as in-house counsel and practice law in Rhode Island.

In-house attorneys must be members in good standing of another state and are subject to Articles III (Disciplinary Procedures), IV (Registration and CLE), and V (Rules of Professional Conduct).

In-house attorneys may practice on behalf of the corporation or entity where the attorney is employed, its directors, officers, and employees in their respective official or employment capacities, or its commonly owned or controlled organizational affiliates. Attorneys cannot appear in any court, agency, or municipal proceeding that the attorney has reason to believe is contested, prior to the proceeding, unless the attorney is admitted Rhode Island Pro Hac Vice.
