Michigan Multijurisdictional Practice (MJP)

Michigan Rules of Professional Conduct and Rule 8.5 address unauthorized and multijurisdictional practice. See the MJP hub for general background.

Out-of-state lawyers generally may not establish a systematic and continuous Michigan practice or hold out as Michigan-admitted except as authorized (including BLE Rule 5(D) special certificates).

Temporary practice

Temporary services under Michigan RPC 5.5(c) may be permitted when requirements are met. Court appearances remain subject to pro hac vice.

House counsel

Continuous institutional or employer practice may require a BLE Rule 5(D) special certificate. Confirm current RPC text on the Michigan Courts site.
