Connecticut Bar Exam Format

The Connecticut bar exam is the Uniform Bar Exam (“UBE”). The Connecticut bar exam consists of the Multistate Performance Test (“MPT”), Multistate Essay Exam (“MEE”), and the Multistate Bar Exam (“MBE”).

MPT (Performance Test)
Connecticut tests two (2) MPT performance tests.

MEE Essays
Connecticut tests six (6) MEE essays. Subjects include:

  • Business Associations (Agency and Partnership; Corporations and LLCs)
  • Civil Procedure (Federal)
  • Conflict of Laws
  • Constitutional Law
  • Contracts (Common Law, Sales/UCC Art. 2)
  • Criminal Law
  • Criminal Procedure
  • Evidence
  • Family Law
  • Negotiable Instruments/Commercial Paper (UCC Art. 3)
  • Real Property
  • Secured Transactions (UCC Art. 9)
  • Torts
  • Trusts and Estates (Decedents’ Estates; Trusts and Future Interests)

MBE (Multiple Choice)
Connecticut uses the standard MBE. Subjects include:

  • Civil Procedure
  • Constitutional Law
  • Contracts (Common Law, Sales/UCC Art. 2)
  • Criminal Law
  • Criminal Procedure
  • Evidence
  • Real Property
  • Torts

Score Transfer
Connecticut accepts UBE scores within three years of attaining a total scaled sore of 266 or greater. Connecticut accepts MBE scores from the three prior administrations of the bar exam.

Connecticut Bar Exam Testing Schedule

Day 1 (Tuesday)
2 MPTs (3 hours) and 6 MEE Essays (3 hours)

Day 2 (Wednesday)
Morning – MBE Part I (100 questions; 3 hours)
Afternoon – MBE Part II (100 questions; 3 hours)

Connecticut Bar Exam Dates and Application

The Connecticut bar exam is held twice each year on the last Tuesday and Wednesday of February and July. Applications can be found on the Connecticut Bar Examining Committee’s Website.

Grading

MEE 30%
MPT 20%
MBE 50%

Grading Procedure
The essay scaled score and MBE scaled score are combined to generate the total bar exam score.

Passing Score
The minimum passing score is a total bar exam score of 266 out of 400.

Review and Appeal for Applicants Failing the Connecticut Bar Exam
Applicants with total scores between 256 and 265 have their essay answers reread. Unless the applicant clearly demonstrates that a clerical error has been made or that the Committee’s grading procedures have been violated, there is no review of the applicant’s answers or scores once the results of the bar exam are released.

Retaking the Connecticut Bar Exam

Applicants may take the Connecticut bar exam an unlimited number of times.
